Indian dhurrie is the workshop discipline that sits closest to the Indian house. The form was woven for floors, walls, takhats and palanquins, and its geometry was tuned to the shapes of the household rather than to the formal medallion grammar of the imported Persian carpet.
The work took two to three weeks on a horizontal loom under One. The yarn was prepared in small dye batches and packed weft by weft against a cotton warp. There is no knot and no pile; the design is built into the weft and the rug carries the same image on both faces. The flat structure makes the piece fully reversible across its working life.
The composition
A multi-toned palette is what the composition is for. The pattern is the device that delivers the colour at room scale; the design is in service of the palette rather than the other way around. The wool was hand-spun and the dyes prepared in small batches, so the field carries the quiet unevenness that the human hand leaves on every step of the process. The piece reads as patina from the day it is unrolled, rather than acquiring patina across years of wear.
The piece in a room
2' x 3' works as a punctuation rug. Place it beside a bed, under a corner armchair, or in front of an entry door, where its geometry registers on the body before it registers on the eye. The colour holds at close range and across distance; the wool carries enough body that the piece feels warm underfoot in any season.
Care
Vacuum the surface once a week on suction. Both faces of the flatweave are usable, so the piece should be flipped at six-month intervals to even wear. Treat spills with a damp cotton cloth and cool water, blotting outward to inward. Dry-clean the rug every three to four years through a wool-trained cleaner to keep the foundation clear and the dye bright.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
