Across northern India the dhurrie has a workshop history that runs without interruption from the seventeenth century to the present. The technique demands patience rather than equipment, which is why the form survived industrialisation and continues to come off the same kind of horizontal loom that worked the rugs of the Mughal storerooms.
Two weavers worked the rug across around three weeks on a horizontal loom. There is no pile and no knot; the design is built into the weft and packed down with a wooden beater after each row. The structure is reversible by design and lays close to the floor without bulk. The wool was hand-spun and dyed in small batches before any of it reached the warp. The flat construction reads as cloth more than carpet and ages by softening rather than by wearing.
The composition
The work is composed around a multi-toned palette. The figure is held at a quiet density across the field so the rug reads as ground rather than as ornament, which is the difference between a carpet that recedes into the room and one that fights with the rest of the furnishing. The colour will deepen and the geometry will tighten across the first year of use. Plant-derived dye gives the field a soft tonal register that synthetic colour does not reach; the wool ages into the palette rather than against it.
The piece in a room
At 4' x 6' the rug works as a small considered statement on the floor, beside a bed, beneath an entry console, or in front of a low cabinet. The piece is read at close range and the geometry rewards the proximity. Pairs naturally with brass and walnut, with stone, with dark concrete; sits comfortably on engineered timber and on lime-finished plaster floors alike.
Care
Daily care is minimal. Vacuum the surface weekly with the bar disengaged. Reverse the rug at six-month intervals so the two faces age in step. Spills are addressed with cool water on a soft cloth, blotting outward to inward. Periodic professional dry cleaning at three to four-year intervals keeps the structure clean and the dye honest.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
