Rugsville Southwest Handmade Jute Dhurrie Carpet 4' x 6'

The jute crop has anchored the rural textile economy of eastern India for two millennia, the unspun fibre carrying the rough golden register that turns up in finished work as the natural ground colour. The neutral reading in this piece sits in the contemporary end of that arc.

The dhurrie was woven on a flatbed loom over 2 weeks by a pair of weavers, weft-faced cotton beaten tight against the warp so the surface lies almost as a textile rather than a pile carpet. No knots, no pile, only the interlock of the structure itself. The dye registers on jute / sisal sit deep into the fibre rather than as a surface coat, which is why the colour reads with the same depth on the back of the rug as on the front. Both faces are working surfaces; many households reverse the rug at the seasons to even out the wear and the light exposure.

The composition

The natural reads with the soft, slightly hand-spun irregularity that distinguishes loom work from machine print. Pattern is built up from solid blocks of colour rather than through pile relief, and the joins where colour meets colour are visible as small structural marks the weaver did not try to hide. The piece reads differently from across the room than from close range. At distance the natural reads as a single ground; on approach the structural register of the weave and the small irregularities in the dye come through as the actual surface of the work.

Care

Light vacuuming once a week, suction only, no rotating brush. Spot clean with cool water; do not introduce strong detergents that contain optical brighteners. The piece is reversible and benefits from being turned over each season. A specialist clean every two to three years extends the working life by decades, and a thin underlay protects both the rug and the floor beneath it.
