The long-pile rug has its origins in the Anatolian winter room, where the tulu and yatak weavings were built deep enough to function as both floor cover and bedding. The form moved into European interior design through the Scandinavian houses of the 1950s and into California through the modernist beach-house tradition that followed.

Two weavers at the loom for six to seven weeks. The structure was built up by feel against a charted plan, with the wool spun, dyed and packed in the same workshop. Every step of the work is by hand, which is why the surface carries the slow tonal drift that distinguishes a hand-made carpet from anything industrial. The piece will continue to settle into itself for the first months of use.

The composition

The composition is anchored in a gray register. The pattern is allowed enough silence around it that the rug reads as ground rather than as figure, which is the harder achievement in carpet design. The tonal range is narrow by design and the colour relationships will tighten as the wool settles in over the first months of use. The piece is meant to recede into the architecture of the room and let the furniture, the art, and the light do the speaking. Up close the small variations across the field are visible as the trace of a hand-dyed wool batched in small lots.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' sits naturally under a six-seater dining arrangement, or beneath a medium sectional in a living area. The rug is sized to be visible from above when the family is seated and from the side when guests walk in. The geometry resolves at standing distance and the colour deepens under the wash of overhead light.

Care

The piece needs nothing more than weekly vacuuming and the occasional flip. Suction only, no beater bar. Cool water and a drop of mild detergent handle ordinary household spills if treated promptly and blotted from the edge inward. A professional dry clean every three to four years brings the colour back to its production register.
