The shivling form is one of the oldest aniconic shapes in Indian visual culture, recorded in stone at temple sites that predate written record. Translated to a contemporary Tibetan loom and rendered on a round, the motif loses its sculptural specificity and becomes a tonal ovoid floating in a graphite field, the way a seed pearl sits inside a concave silver setting. The colour is grey on grey, the pattern almost dissolved, the rug working as a piece of soft modernist abstraction with a long Indian root.
Two weavers shared the loom on this 6' (183 cm) round for roughly four months. The pile is hand-spun wool blended with bombyx mulberry silk on a cotton foundation, tied with the Tibetan senna loop and cut to two slightly different heights to give the central form a shallow relief above the surrounding grey field. The wool was dyed in iron mordant with a small percentage of walnut hull. The silk was undyed and used in its natural cream state to lift the highlights of the central oval.
The composition
Three values of grey, a warm cream from the undyed silk, and an almost imperceptible darker outline that defines the central form. From the distance of a doorway, the piece reads as a soft circular field with one suggestion of weight at the centre. Up close, the wool reveals its hand-spun irregularity and the silk catches afternoon light. The grey will continue to age. Iron-mordanted wool deepens slowly as the iron oxidises further inside the fibre, and the cream silk holds its tone as a counterpoint.
What you are buying
Round Tibetan carpets in wool and silk, particularly at this size, are uncommon enough that Western dealers price them between three and four and a half lakh rupees when they appear at gallery shows. The senna construction, the silk content, and the natural mordant dye process are identical to that pipeline. The piece is hand-knotted in India in the same workshops that supply New York and London designers, and it appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
A 6' (183 cm) round in grey reads as a quiet ground in almost any setting. It works under a circular dining table for four, in a foyer where a square rug would feel rigid, or beneath a single armchair set against pale plaster walls. The palette pairs with limed oak, white marble, brushed nickel, and indigo upholstery. A single black and white photograph reads well above it. Strong colour in the room should be reserved for upholstery; the rug holds the floor as a quiet ground.
Conservation
Rotate a quarter turn each season. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar lifted off the silk passages. Blot with cotton, never rub. A wool-and-silk specialist hand-wash every five years preserves both the dye depth and the silk lustre. With this care, the rug runs sixty to seventy years and the grey deepens into a colour the original mordant never reached on day one.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
