A modern rug is built to read as one image rather than as a repeating pattern. The studio tradition the piece descends from runs from the Bauhaus weave room through Eileen Gray's villa rugs and into the present. The composition is its own argument; nothing in it refers outward.

The work occupied the loom for around four months under Two. The wool is hand-spun and the dye batches were small enough that the field carries a slight tonal drift as it crosses the rug. The whole piece is washed after weaving to settle the colour and bring up the surface sheen.

The composition

Rust and navy dominates the composition. The geometry sits at considered scale, neither pushed forward as ornament nor pulled back into ground. Plant-derived dye gives the surface a soft register that synthetic colour cannot reach, and the wool ages into the palette rather than against it. The detail in the field is meant to be discovered by the foot before it is read by the eye, which is why the rug responds so well to a low, centred furniture arrangement. Across the first season of use the wool will oxidise into a slightly deeper register and the dye will find its final saturation against the warp.

What you are buying

Read the auction records before reading the price. Antique pieces in this lineage, in comparable scale, with original colour intact, change hands at international rooms at four to eight times this figure. This is a new weaving made on the same loom, in the same fibre, to a comparable density. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is the working argument for a hand-knotted carpet at any price point.

The piece in a room

4' x 6' works as a punctuation rug. Place it beside a bed, under a corner armchair, or in front of an entry door, where its geometry registers on the body before it registers on the eye. The colour holds at close range and across distance; the wool carries enough body that the piece feels warm underfoot in any season.

Conservation

Conservation of a hand-knotted carpet is a matter of small consistent attention. Rotate the rug end for end at six-month intervals to even the wear. Vacuum weekly on suction with no rotary brush; the bar will pull at the pile and accelerate ageing. Blot any spill immediately with a clean dry cotton cloth, working from the outside of the spill toward its centre. Send the piece for a hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
