A tufted rug is a wool drawing made flat. The cartoon is taped to the back of the canvas. The tufter works from the reverse side, trusting the design to come up clean on the front. When the canvas is cut from the frame, the face is sheared, washed, and finished by hand, then bonded with natural latex and a cotton scrim.

This rug was hand-tufted in India over 8 weeks by a small team of two tufters and a finisher. Wool pulled through a stretched cotton canvas one row at a time, then bonded at the back with natural latex and a cotton scrim. The pile was sheared by hand at the end so the rust field sits clean against any contour the design holds, and the rug was washed and dried flat to set the surface.

The composition

A composition built around a rust ground that warms toward terracotta in lamplight. The pattern develops at a measured pace and the colour holds its register across the field. What looks like a single colour at the door resolves into three or four close tones once you stand on the rug, which is the property that separates wool work from printed alternatives.

The piece in a room

At 9' × 12' (274 × 366 cm) the rug operates at drawing-room scale. The rust field carries a sectional sofa, a six-to-eight seat dining table, or a king bed with both nightstands above the pile. This is the size at which the rug becomes the work the room is arranged around rather than the surface that sits beneath it. Mid-tone walls hold the saturation and direct daylight restores the dye depth that interior light slowly washes out. Settles into rooms that already trust their architecture and uses the field to soften rather than to declare.

Care

Vacuum weekly, beater bar off. Expect light shedding for the first six to eight weeks as loose fibre works free of the pile. Blot spills, never rub. Professional dry clean every two to three years. A tufted rug treated this way holds its weight and finish for ten to fifteen years.
