The patchwork carpet is one of the few traditions that started as an act of frugality and ended as an act of design. Old Anatolian villagers cut the still-living parts out of worn kilims, stitched them into new mats, and accepted the colour mismatches as part of the record. By the 1990s the look had moved into intentional production, with workshops in central India weaving the irregular block grid directly onto a single loom rather than seaming separate panels. The aesthetic logic remained: cooperation across difference, rather than uniformity.

Three weavers shared the loom for around six months on this larger format. The pile is hand-spun wool over a cotton foundation. Every block carries its own colour palette and motif; the colour transitions between blocks were tied in by hand, knot by knot, against a working cartoon hung at the back of the loom. The finished rug was sheared by hand, washed twice in cold stream water, and stretched on a bamboo frame for ten days to settle the warp tension before final inspection.

The composition

An asymmetric grid of rectangular and square blocks in a multi palette of indigo, ochre, ivory, saffron, deep teal, plum, and two sage greens. Each block carries its own internal motif, from medallion fragments to repeat lattice to plain ground. The visual logic shifts every few inches but the wool's tonal memory holds the whole composition together. Over a few years the brighter accents soften and the rug develops the unified patina of an older textile rather than the stitched-together look it presents on day one.

What you are buying

Vintage Anatolian patchwork pieces in this scale start around five lakh in the dealer rooms of Istanbul and London. New patchwork weavings of this density and pile depth, in hand-spun wool, are typically priced between one lakh fifty and two lakh fifty by Indian workshops. This piece sits below that range because the workshop relationship is direct. The wool appreciates and the design idiom does not date.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) sits comfortably under a three-seat sofa with two chairs, or a six-seat dining table, with the rug reading as the room's primary graphic element. The patchwork field is generous to mixed upholstery, salvaged furniture, and changing wall art. The multi palette discourages monochrome interior schemes; this rug wants company and conversation, not a museum-white envelope.

Conservation

Vacuum once a week with the beater bar disengaged so the wool stays compact. Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn. Blot any liquid spill at once with a dry cotton cloth and follow with cold water only. Engage a wool-trained conservator for a hand wash every five years. With this attention the rug will run eighty to a hundred years, with patina deepening through that life.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
