Patchwork as a carpet idea owes more to nineteenth-century Anatolian rug repair than to any single design movement. When a kilim or a knotted carpet wore through in patches, the village weaver would cut the surviving panels and stitch them into a new whole, accepting the colour clashes as honest accounting of the fabric's life. Late-twentieth-century Turkish dealers turned that necessity into an aesthetic, and the look has since travelled into new weaving across India, where workshops build the patchwork directly into the loom rather than splicing finished pieces.

Three weavers shared the loom for around four and a half months on this carpet. The pile is recycled sari silk and the foundation is cotton; the patchwork composition was drawn out in advance on graph paper and translated into a working cartoon for the loom. Each block was tied with its own palette, with the boundaries between blocks set off by a single row of contrasting silk so the visual grammar of stitched repair stays intact. The piece was finished with a hand-shear and a cold-water wash.

The composition

A grid of irregular rectangles in a multi palette: cobalt, ochre, dusk pink, mint, terracotta, ivory, and two depths of indigo. The blocks read as a quilt rather than as a continuous field, with the eye moving from one panel to the next rather than tracking a central axis. Silk catches and releases light at slightly different angles in each block, so the surface shifts between matte and reflective in irregular pulses. Over a decade the colour intensity softens and the patchwork takes on the unified patina of older textiles.

What you are buying

Original antique patchwork pieces, when they appear, sell at Rippon Boswell and Bonhams in the range of three to seven lakh, depending on age and condition. This is a new weaving in the same idiom, on an upright loom, in a fibre that compresses less than wool. The rug appreciates with use as the silk polishes; it does not wear out as flooring the way a synthetic surface does. The price-to-loom-time ratio is uncommon in this category.

The piece in a room

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) suits a living room with a three-seat sofa and a chair or two facing it, or a master bedroom under a king bed pulled forward into the room. The multi palette is forgiving of mixed upholstery, mismatched art, and saturated walls. Avoid pairing with strongly patterned curtains because the rug expects to be the graphic anchor in the composition.

Conservation

Vacuum gently with suction only and the beater bar disengaged. Rotate the rug every six months so light and footfall age the surface evenly. Address any spill immediately with a dry cotton cloth and never use a wet rag on silk. Schedule a professional hand wash by a silk-trained conservator every five to seven years. With this care the piece runs eighty years and outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
