Rugsville Sari Silk Patchwork Multi Carpet 4'6" x 6'6

The sari silk yarn that produced this rug began as worn and discarded silk saris, opened, sorted, and recarded into a single fibre that holds every colour the saris once held. The result is a yarn no synthetic process can replicate, with a chromatic depth that comes from many lifetimes of cloth.

The pile is hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation. 2 weavers shared the loom across 2-3 months, working at roughly 100 knots per square inch. That gives a finished count of around 345 thousand hand-tied knots. The dyes were prepared in small batches and the wool was lowered into them before being washed in clean water and sun-dried over several days. Every step is done by hand because the result depends on it.

The composition

Every colour in the field comes from a different sari, and every metre of pile shifts in tone as the recovered yarns rotate through the loom. Silk takes light at a different angle from wool, which is why the field reads as wet on first sight. The dominant tones run to multi-colour.

The piece in a room

4' x 6' (122 x 183 cm) carries a study, a moderate sitting area, or a primary bedroom anchored over the bed. The field has presence without dominance. Holds against both cool whites and the warmer browns of older interiors.

Conservation

Treat the rug as the long-lived object it is. Suction-only vacuuming, weekly. Twice-yearly rotation to balance light and footfall. A wool-trained hand wash every five years. Spills blotted, never rubbed. With that routine the piece appreciates rather than depreciates, the way every well-kept hand-knotted weaving does.
