Red and blue have been the founding pair of carpet design since the loom began. Indigo and madder were the two pigments most weavers had reliable access to in any region, and the colour relationship that emerged became a kind of universal vocabulary, drawn on by Anatolian villages, Safavid court workshops, Caucasian highlanders, and the great Persian medallion houses. The Sadie pattern carries that inheritance forward at full living-room scale.
Three weavers shared the loom for close to six months. Around 2.5 million asymmetric knots were tied by hand against the cotton warp, each row packed into the previous with a metal comb. The pile is hand-spun wool, yarn-dyed in the skein before the warp was set, then luster washed at finishing so the surface relaxes and the colour settles into its mellow register. The red is built across two dye baths, the blue across two more, which is why both colours hold a small tonal drift rather than reading as machine-flat.
The composition
A wide red field carrying a stepped blue medallion at the centre, the corner work echoing the medallion at lower saturation, the border drawn in deeper blue at heavier saturation. The drawing is graphic, line widths bold enough to read from across the room. Over the first decade the red will lose its initial heat and the blue will deepen. What now reads as graphic contrast will, in time, read as the kind of resolved colour balance only an aged medallion carpet holds.
What you are buying
Antique medallion carpets at 8' x 10' with comparable colour and condition trade through Sotheby's, Bonhams, and Rippon Boswell at three to five times this asking price when they reach auction in clean state. This is a new weaving in the same lineage, hand-knotted on a vertical loom, in hand-spun wool, with mineral and plant-leaning dyes. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. The structural property that distinguishes a hand-knotted piece from anything else on a floor is exactly that.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) carries a primary living room laid out around a sofa and two armchairs with the rug fully under the seating, or a dining setup for six to eight with the chairs clear of the field. The red and blue palette pairs with walnut, oak, brass, leather, and unframed paper or canvas art. It holds against lime-washed walls in cool tones and against deeper grey plaster. It centres a library or a study without crowding the architecture.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and foot traffic spread evenly across the face. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a cotton cloth. A wool-trained conservator should hand wash the piece every five to seven years to lift embedded soil. The rug runs eighty to a hundred years with this care.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
