The stripe is the most economical mark a loom can make. Every weaving culture in the world begins with a stripe and most return to it. The Pueblo, the Tuareg, the Welsh, the Bauhaus, all settled on the simple horizontal band as the truest expression of what a loom does.

The work occupied One weaver and a finisher across around four weeks. The pile was tufted face-down on a stretched frame, with each loop pulled through the canvas one at a time. After the tufting was complete the back was sealed with natural latex and reinforced with a cotton scrim; the surface was then sheared by hand and washed to bring the dye to its final saturation.

The composition

Anchored in beige, rust and red. The composition is built to be read at room scale rather than at photograph scale; the geometry resolves into its detail only when the rug is approached on foot. The wool was washed after weaving to settle the dye and bring the surface to its final feel; the slight matte sheen comes up under both window light and lamp. The piece is built to be discovered slowly. Across distance it is one quiet ground; at close range the small variations of dye and weave become visible as the trace of the hand.

The piece in a room

3' x 5' is the working scale for a foyer, a doorway runner length, or alongside a low chest in a small reading corner. The rug is meant to be encountered up close at this size and its detail repays the proximity. The piece carries enough individual presence that the surrounding furniture can be kept simple; an armchair, a side table, a single floor lamp.

Care

Vacuum once a week with the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spills immediately with a clean dry cloth, then a slightly damp one; do not rub. Initial shedding for four to six weeks is normal and does not affect the body of the pile underneath. Have the rug professionally dry-cleaned every two to three years to preserve the surface and clear the latex backing of accumulated dust.
