Two weavers worked together for around three and a half months on this 5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) piece. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton warp and weft, knotted in the Persian asymmetric pattern. Each strand of yarn carries minor variation in thickness and twist, which is what produces the visible breath in the finished surface. The wool was lightly tea-washed at the finish stage, lending the surface a soft antiqued bloom rather than the brightness of a fresh weaving.

The composition

A beige ground with floral and vine work running corner to corner in the brown register, with a deeper russet used as the resolving line at the edges of each motif. The brown is not a single tone but a layered set of values pulled from the fleece sort, which is what gives the leaf forms their shadowed look without any deliberate shading on the cartoon. The colour will deepen over the years as light works on the wool.

What you are buying

A hand-knotted wool floor at this density and finish trades in Western retail between 3 and 4 thousand pounds when stocked, which is roughly four times the price asked here. The reason is that India still holds the constructional knowledge to weave at this standard at a labour rate that has not yet caught up with the rest of the global premium-textile economy. That gap will close. A piece bought now appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The beige and brown palette is most at home with walnut, oak, brass, and warm whites. Conservation

Turn a quarter every six months. Vacuum on low suction with the beater bar off. Blot spills with a clean white cotton cloth, never rub. A trained wool conservator should hand wash the piece every five to six years to clear dust below the visible pile.
