The dhurrie has lived in subcontinental domestic and palace interiors for a thousand years, a flat-weave form that survived the arrival of pile carpet under the Mughals because its lighter weight and reversibility suited the climate and the season. The neutral palette is the current edit of that long vocabulary.

The dhurrie was woven on a flatbed loom over 3 weeks by a pair of weavers, weft-faced cotton beaten tight against the warp so the surface lies almost as a textile rather than a pile carpet. No knots, no pile, only the interlock of the structure itself. The jute / sisal carries its colour with the slight tonal variation only natural fibre and small-batch dye produce. No two square feet of the rug read identically; that irregularity is the difference between a hand-loomed piece and a printed copy. The yarn was sourced and spun specifically for this production batch rather than pulled off general inventory, and the colour register stays consistent across the full run of the rug.

The composition

A natural field carrying the geometry as a graphic block, the flat surface giving the colour a matte register that holds steady through changing light. The pattern is built into the cloth rather than printed onto it, which is why the back of the rug carries the same design as the front in mirror. The piece reads differently from across the room than from close range. At distance the natural reads as a single ground; on approach the structural register of the weave and the small irregularities in the dye come through as the actual surface of the work.

Care

Light vacuuming once a week, suction only, no rotating brush. Spot clean with cool water; do not introduce strong detergents that contain optical brighteners. The piece is reversible and benefits from being turned over each season. A specialist clean every two to three years extends the working life by decades, and a thin underlay protects both the rug and the floor beneath it.
