Mashad weaving is the slow strain of classical Persian carpet making. Where other regional traditions favour bold contrast, the Mashad school developed a vocabulary built on tonal sympathy, fields and figures separated by no more than a few values, drawn so the eye reads pattern as a single breath rather than as outlined design. The pattern in this rug belongs to that school. A light green ground with brown floral work threaded through it in tones close enough to read as the same family.
Two weavers shared the loom for close to four months. About 1.4 million asymmetric knots were tied row by row against the cotton warp, each pass beaten down with a wooden comb. The pile is yarn-dyed hand-spun wool, the dye taken in the skein before the warp was set, then luster washed at the end of weaving to relax the surface and draw the lanolin back into the fibre. The brown carries a slight reddish undertone where the dye took a second bath, which gives the floral work depth rather than reading as a flat shape.
The composition
A pale green field with brown floral repeats running edge to edge, the border drawn in the same brown at heavier saturation. The drawing is deliberately quiet, line widths held narrow so the figure never crowds the ground. Over the first decade the green will lighten slightly and the brown will move toward warm walnut. What now reads as deliberate restraint will, in time, read as the kind of unforced harmony only a Mashad can hold.
What you are buying
Antique Mashad-school carpets at 5' x 8' with comparable condition trade at Sotheby's and Rippon Boswell in the range of three to five times this asking price when they appear in clean state. This is a contemporary weaving in the same tradition, hand-knotted on a vertical loom, in hand-spun wool. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is the property that distinguishes a true hand-knotted piece from any tufted or machine equivalent.
The piece in a room
5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) suits a primary bedroom set under the foot of the bed, or a sitting area arranged around two armchairs and a low table. The light green and brown palette pairs with walnut floors, oak panelling, and unframed art. It holds against pale plaster walls and against lime wash in cooler tones. The rug carries the colour of the room rather than fighting for it.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn every six months to spread foot traffic and light evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a cotton cloth, never rub. Hand wash by a wool conservator every five to seven years. With this care the rug holds its colour and structure for sixty to eighty years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
