Court carpets of classical Persia were woven for spaces where light moved across the floor in a controlled way, through narrow window grilles or between columns at fixed intervals. The pattern was drawn to reward exactly that kind of slow, sectional reading. The Persian Court family of designs in this rug carries that intention. Two weavers shared the loom for about four months. Around 1.4 million asymmetric knots were tied by hand against the cotton warp, each row pressed down with a wooden comb against the previous row. The pile is hand-spun wool, yarn-dyed in the skein before warp setting, then luster washed at the finishing stage so the lanolin redistributes and the surface settles into its mellow tone. The dyes lean plant rather than mineral, which is why the colour carries a slight tonal drift across the field rather than reading as a single saturation.

The composition

A pale blue ground with a beige medallion at the centre, vine work in deeper blue threading through both. The border is restrained, a narrow guard band rather than a layered frame, which lets the field carry the visual weight. The colour will move over the first decade. The blue will lose a touch of saturation, the beige will warm into honey, and the vine work will deepen rather than fade. A vegetable-leaning Persian does not arrive complete. It arrives ready to age into itself.

This is a contemporary weaving in the same tradition, on a vertical loom, in hand-spun wool, with the irregularities a hand always leaves. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. 5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) is the working scale for a sitting area set around two upholstered chairs and a low table, or for a primary bedroom positioned under the foot of the bed. The light blue and beige palette holds against pale plaster and against deeper grey lime wash. It pairs with linen, with oak, with brass, and with unframed art on paper or canvas.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn every spring and autumn so light and foot traffic age the rug evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, no beater bar. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand wash the piece every five to seven years to lift embedded soil. The rug runs sixty to eighty years with this routine.
