The form was a way of rescuing wool from carpets too far gone to restore. Hand-knotted patchworks like this one belong to a later generation of the idea: rather than reusing antique cloth, the weavers tied each square as a separate small carpet on the same loom and finished the ensemble with hand shearing to give the surface the worn-down silhouette the form expects.

Two to three weavers shared the loom for close to four months. The pile is hand-spun wool, dyed in small batches in the gold and rust palette of the carpet, and the squares are arranged in an irregular grid so no two adjacent panels share a motif or a saturation level. After the carpet came off the loom it received a hand-shearing pass that lowers the pile in select panels and leaves others at full height.

The composition

A grid of ochre, mustard, terracotta, and burnt sienna squares, each carrying its own small motif: a star, a stepped diamond, a row of stylised flowers. The sheared panels read as recessed planes against the unsheared, which is what gives the surface its tactile depth. The palette holds together because every dye lot was prepared from the same root and bark group; the variation is tonal rather than chromatic. The carpet will mellow rather than fade.

Conservation

Rotate every six months to keep wear even across the panels. Vacuum once a week with the beater bar lifted. Spot clean with a cotton cloth and cool water; the hand-shearing means the cut panels respond differently from the full-pile panels, and aggressive scrubbing will smooth that distinction out. Hand-wash by a conservator every five to six years.
