The patchwork overdye emerged in the early 2000s as a way of reanimating older hand-knotted carpets that had outlived their original interiors. Sections were cut, sorted by tone, stripped, then re-dyed in a single saturating bath. The result reads as a single field at a distance and as a record of many earlier rugs on close inspection. The burnt umber overdye in this piece is one of the more difficult tones to pull cleanly because the colour sits between brown and red and shifts under different light.

The work is layered. Original hand-knotted wool segments were sourced from older carpets, sheared, washed, then re-dyed by lowering each piece into an overdye bath of burnt umber for two days at temperature. The segments were stitched together by hand on a cotton backing and the pile finished with a second light shear. The total work for the rug runs around four months for two artisans on the cutting and dye side and a finisher.

The composition

Burnt umber across the entire field, with the underlying patterns of the original carpets ghosting through as faint tonal variations. Some sections read warmer, some pull toward terracotta, and a few hold a quiet rust note that catches under lamplight. The overdye does not flatten the surface. It unifies it without erasing the history beneath. The colour will deepen by half a stop over the first two years and stabilise.

What you are buying

Original patchwork overdyes from the European studios that pioneered the technique sell through Western dealers at four to six lakh. This is a hand-knotted wool overdye in the same idiom at a fraction of that, sourced direct from the workshop. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating because the constituent material is older hand-knotted pile, not new fibre.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) suits a primary living area or a dining set for six. The burnt umber works hardest against cream plaster walls, against pale oak floors, and against deep walnut joinery. It pairs with leather, with brass lighting, and with art using ochre, rust, and warm white. Cool grey upholstery fights the field; warm linen settles into it.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly with suction only. Rotate each spring and autumn. Spills blot dry with a clean cotton cloth. The overdye is colour-fast under domestic conditions but should never be exposed to bleach or strong solvents. A specialist hand-wash every five years removes embedded grit and restores lanolin. The rug runs another sixty years on this regime.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
