Oxidised dyeing is a contemporary technique that came out of the Indian workshops in the 1990s, when designers began asking the dye houses for the chromatic depth of an antique Persian carpet without the decades of natural ageing. The process washes a hand-knotted rug in a controlled iron-rich solution after the pile is finished, which oxidises the dyes by a few values and produces a subtle silvery cast across the entire field. The grey here is the result of that wash applied to a wool and silk pile woven in the modernist abstract idiom.
Three weavers shared the loom for six months. The pile combines New Zealand wool with mulberry silk in irregular distribution across the cartoon, so the silk catches the oxidising wash differently from the wool and the field develops a layered texture rather than a flat tone. Knots are Persian asymmetric tied by feel against the beam. After the rug came off the loom, it was washed in the iron solution, sun-dried, then washed again in a mild neutralising bath, the entire process supervised by hand to control the depth of the oxidation.
The composition
A grey field that ranges from charcoal at the edges to a soft pewter through the centre, with silver and bone passages where the silk concentrates and the oxidising wash has lightened them most. There is no medallion and no border. The composition reads as weather seen through smoked glass. The rug shifts considerably under different light. North light cools it. Tungsten warms it toward bronze. The piece holds attention for years because there is no fixed point at which it resolves.
What you are buying
Oxidised wool and silk hand-knotted carpets at 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) from the studios that pioneered the technique sit at $11,000 to $22,000 in the contemporary design trade. This piece is woven and washed to the same standard, in the same workshops, sold direct. A wool and silk carpet finished by oxidising appreciates as the silk burnishes through the first decade and the field gains the second-stage patina that the wash sets up.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) anchors a contemporary lounge or a dining room with eight to ten chairs. The grey palette settles under any wall colour and reads as architecture rather than as ornament. Pairs with raw oak, blackened steel, and natural linen. A strong contemporary work on the principal wall lifts the rug forward and gives the silk passages something to dialogue with.
Conservation
Half-turn the rug every six months. Vacuum suction-only weekly. Blot spills with cotton. The oxidised pile is more sensitive to alkaline detergents than a standard wool rug, so any specialist wash should be done by a conservator who has handled oxidised carpets before. Wash every five to seven years. The piece typically runs sixty to eighty years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
