Classical Persian floral cartoons drew from a vegetable palette of madder, indigo, weld, walnut, and oak gall. The colours sat together comfortably because they were held within a narrow tonal register rather than competing for attention as separate hues. The Oxidye multi-floral takes that compositional logic into a contemporary palette of soft ivory, rose, muted browns, and restrained greens, then submits the finished rug to an oxidising wash that softens the surface to the lived-in quality of an antique workshop piece.

Three weavers worked this rug on a single vertical loom in India for around seven months. The pile is hand-spun wool with bamboo silk drawn through the cartoon highlights, knotted with the Persian asymmetric knot over a tightly sized cotton foundation. After the rug came off the loom it was washed in two passes, the second a controlled oxidising bath, then sun-dried over a hardwood frame before the final shearing brought the pile to its working depth.

The composition

The field carries a multi-colour floral cartoon held within a narrow warm tonal register, so the eye reads pattern rather than competing colour. Silk threads catch raking light at the floral highlights and disappear at flatter angles, which gives the surface a slow optical movement that wool alone could not produce. The wash settles the colours to a unified value across the field. Over the first year of use, the rug will continue to oxidise gently under normal household light.

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) is the canonical living-room scale, suited to a three-seater sofa with two flanking chairs around a low coffee table planted on the field. The warm multi palette pairs with walnut and oak floors, with brass and unlacquered metal, with linen and leather upholstery. The cartoon density holds its own next to patterned upholstery but reads cleanest in restrained rooms.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn so traffic and light age the field evenly. Vacuum on suction only. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. A professional wool-and-silk hand-wash every six to eight years preserves the colour balance and the surface patina. With this care, the rug runs eighty years.
