Multi-colour florals occupy the most demanding territory in classical Persian carpet, because the cartoon has to balance four or five vegetable values without any one of them pulling the eye out of the field. Workshops handled the problem by holding most of the colours within a narrow tonal band and letting only one or two values carry the contrast. The Oxidye floral cartoon takes that discipline into a contemporary palette and then submits the finished rug to an oxidising wash, so the colours read like an antique that has been working a floor for forty years.

Two weavers shared a vertical loom in India for around six months. The pile blends hand-spun wool with bamboo silk, with the silk drawn through highlights so the floral cartoon catches raking light. Persian asymmetric knot. Cotton warp and weft. The rug was washed twice after coming off the loom, the second wash an oxidising bath, and then sun-dried over a hardwood frame before the final shearing set the pile depth.

The composition

The field is built from soft ivory, oxidised rose, muted brown, and a single restrained green, all held within a narrow tonal range so the multi-colour palette reads as a single warm ground rather than a busy field of competing parts. Silk highlights pick up light at certain angles and disappear at others. The cartoon is a classical floral with vine work running corner to corner, drawn from the workshop archive but reworked in scale and colour for a contemporary interior.

Conservation

Rotate twice a year. Vacuum on suction only with the beater bar disengaged, which protects the silk highlights. Blot spills with clean cotton, never rub. A professional wool-and-silk hand-wash every six to eight years preserves the patina and the colour balance. With this care, the rug runs sixty to eighty years.
