Black-ground floral carpets are the rarest survivors of the Safavid court tradition. Black is the most fugitive natural-dye colour to fix correctly because the iron mordants that bind it can over time corrode the wool itself. Workshops that produce a stable black ground today have to source their dye chemistry carefully and wash the finished wool through several rinses before the pile is laid on the loom. This rug works inside that demanding lineage, finished further with the contemporary oxidye process.

Three weavers shared the loom for around seven months in India. The construction is a Persian asymmetric knot through cotton warp, wool body, with silk highlights drawn into the floral pattern. The black ground was dyed in an iron-mordant bath stabilised with pomegranate-skin tannin to prevent later wool damage. After the rug came off the loom it passed through the oxidising wash, which softened the contrast between the black ground and the floral motifs by about thirty percent.

The composition

A deep black field carries an all-over floral repeat in muted ivory, pale rose, soft sage, and silk highlights in tea and cream. The flowers are large in scale, drawn after seventeenth-century court designs rather than the smaller herati repeats of the nineteenth century. The black ground gives every motif maximum contrast without using bright colour to do it. From across the room the rug reads as a deep tonal object; from a metre away the full floral architecture emerges.

What you are buying

Stable black-ground wool-and-silk carpets at this scale and density move at international decorative auction in the range of ten to twenty thousand US dollars when condition is sound. This piece is a new weaving on cotton foundation, with silk highlights woven into the pattern rather than embroidered, finished with the oxidye process used by the leading contemporary studios. The rug appreciates as the wool develops a working sheen.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the working scale for a primary living room. Black grounds work best in rooms with mid-tone walls and warm lighting; pure white walls can flatten the contrast. The rug pairs with brass, smoked oak, oxblood leather, and saturated colour upholstery in deep blues and greens. Floated above hardwood, the black ground reads as a considered architectural element rather than a decorative one.

Conservation

Rotate twice yearly. Vacuum weekly, suction only. Black grounds show every speck of light-coloured debris; expect to vacuum more often than for a beige rug. Address spills with immediate downward blotting on dry cotton. Hand wash by a wool-and-silk specialist every four to six years. Keep direct sunlight off the silk highlights to prevent uneven fading.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
