Overdyeing is a finishing process rather than a design decision. The carpet is woven in a traditional Persian or Anatolian idiom, washed and sheared in the standard way, and then lowered into a single immersion bath of one saturated colour that re-stains the entire field. The original pattern shows through as a ghost of the saturated overdye, with the high points carrying the bath colour and the low points retaining hints of the original palette. The technique was developed in Istanbul in the late 1990s and has become the most-copied finishing process in the contemporary carpet trade.
Two weavers shared the loom for around three months in India to produce the underlying carpet. Around 1.4 million asymmetric knots tied against cotton warps in hand-spun wool. The piece was then washed, sheared down to expose the surface for dyeing, and immersed in a violet bath that re-stains the entire field at once. The final shear exposes the original pattern as a low-relief ghost above the saturated violet ground.
The composition
A single saturated violet carries the field, with the original Persian floral pattern surfacing as a low-relief ghost rather than a graphic element. The violet shifts at certain angles toward indigo and at others toward magenta, depending on how the dye penetrated the wool. Over the next decade the saturation will soften and the underlying pattern will read more clearly as the violet lightens. An overdyed carpet is a piece that gets quieter with age rather than louder.
What you are buying
Overdyed Persian carpets in 5' x 8' format with comparable construction trade at western dealer pricing in the range of $1,500 to $4,000. This is a contemporary weaving on hand-built looms, in hand-spun wool, with the overdye applied by hand at the finishing stage. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating. The price point reflects the more democratic position of the overdyed idiom, but the underlying construction is the same hand-knotted wool foundation as the higher-end traditional pieces.
The piece in a room
5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) is the working scale for a primary bedroom under the bed and night stands, a compact living area, or a dining alcove. The violet ground pairs with chalk and bone walls for a softer reading, or with charcoal and ink walls for a more graphic statement. The composition reads as a single saturated field at distance and reveals the Persian ghost pattern on close approach.
Conservation
Rotate twice a year so foot traffic ages the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and cool water, never rub. Schedule a hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. The overdyed surface ages gracefully and the bath colour softens rather than fading.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
