A traditional Persian field reborn under a single saturated bath is one of the most direct visual statements available in the carpet vocabulary. The hand-knotted underlying carpet carries the foundation, and the immersion overdye carries the colour. The technique was pioneered by Anatolian finishing workshops in the late 1990s as a way to introduce older Persian-school carpets to contemporary interiors, and the language has since been picked up across the Indian floor-loom workshops working in hand-spun wool. The result is a piece that reads as a single colour field on first encounter.
Two weavers shared the loom for around three months in India to build the foundation carpet. Around 1.3 million asymmetric knots tied against cotton warps in hand-spun wool. The carpet was washed, sheared, and then immersed in a violet dye bath that penetrates the surface and re-stains the entire field. A final hand-shear exposes the original Persian pattern as a low-relief ghost above the saturated ground.
The composition
Violet carries the field as a saturated ground with no competing tone. The underlying Persian floral pattern surfaces as a textural ghost rather than a graphic element, with the high points of the original design holding more of the violet and the low points retaining hints of the original palette. Over the years the violet will soften and the underlying pattern will read more clearly. An overdyed piece arrives with its loudest reading on day one and ages quieter.
What you are buying
Overdyed hand-knotted carpets in 5' x 7' format with comparable construction trade at western dealer pricing in the range of $1,500 to $4,000. This is a contemporary weaving on hand-built looms, in hand-spun wool, with the overdye applied by hand during finishing. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating. The pricing reflects the democratic positioning of the overdyed line, but the foundation is the same hand-knotted wool the studio uses for its traditional pieces.
The piece in a room
5' x 7' (152 x 213 cm) is the working scale for a compact living area, a primary bedroom under the bed, or a dining alcove with a four-seat table. The violet pairs with chalk walls for a softer reading or with charcoal walls for a more graphic statement. The composition holds as a single saturated field at distance and rewards close inspection where the Persian ghost pattern reveals itself.
Conservation
Rotate the piece twice a year so foot traffic ages the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and cool water, working from the outside inward, never rub. Schedule a hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. The overdyed surface softens with age rather than fading.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
