Complete your setup
Silk takes overdye differently from wool. The fibre is denser, the surface refracts light more sharply, and a single immersion bath produces a depth of colour that feels closer to lacquer than to textile. The Overdyed Silk Red carpet in front of you is built to exploit that property, a hand-knotted piece in silk on a cotton foundation, washed and lowered into a saturated red bath after the field was complete.
Two to three weavers in India spent close to five months at the loom because silk knots tighter and slower than wool. The base composition was a classical Persian floral. After weaving, the rug was washed, sheared down, and immersion-dyed in red, which collapses the original palette beneath the dominant tone and leaves the floral drawing visible as a quieter under-pattern.
The composition
A saturated red field carries the ghost of a classical Persian floral. The silk pile catches light from different angles in a way wool cannot, which means the field reads slightly different by morning and by evening. As the rug ages, the red will deepen toward garnet and the under-drawing will become more legible. The piece operates as a single colour-field statement with the discipline of a traditional cartoon underneath.
What you are buying
Silk-pile overdyed pieces of this size and density trade at international gallery prices in the range of eight to fifteen thousand US dollars. This is a contemporary hand-knotted silk base supplied at a fraction of those numbers. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is the durable basis of value in any silk-pile carpet.
The piece in a room
6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) is the working scale for a formal seating area or a primary bedroom that wants a single colour event on the floor. The red works best against pale plaster walls, walnut floors, and limewashed white. The carpet expects to be the dominant colour in the composition. It pairs cleanly with brass, leather, and unframed art.
Conservation
Silk demands gentler handling than wool. Vacuum weekly with suction only and a stocking over the nozzle. Avoid placing the rug in direct south-facing sunlight for extended periods. Blot spills immediately with absorbent cotton. A silk-trained conservator should wash the carpet every three to five years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
