Overdyeing is a finishing tradition that came out of late twentieth century studio practice, when weavers began taking older woollen carpets and lowering them into a single saturated bath after the pile had already been sheared down. The result is a piece that keeps the bones of a traditional pattern under a unified colour wash, the way a glaze of red lake sits over an underdrawing in a Florentine panel. The red ground in this carpet is not flat. The original motifs surface and recede as the dye took differently to old wool, new wool, and the cotton edges of the design.
Two to three weavers shared the loom for roughly six months on this 6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) piece. The base is hand-knotted New Zealand wool on a cotton foundation, sheared close, antique-washed to relax the lustre, and then immersed in a single hand-prepared bath of madder-tinted dye. The dye saturates unevenly by intent, with deeper pools where the pile is densest and lighter wash where the pattern was thinned during shearing.
The composition
A red field that reads as a single colour from across the room and as half a dozen reds on close inspection. Faint medallion work and floral repeats float through it like a lithograph under tinted varnish. The piece will continue to age. The reds will warm into rust over the next decade, and the ghosted pattern beneath will sharpen as light and traffic differentiate the high points of the pile.
What you are buying
Overdyed carpets at this fibre quality and this scale move through Western dealers and design houses at four to six times this price once they cross an ocean. The work in front of you is the same hand-knotted base, the same wool, the same single-bath process. It appreciates with use rather than depreciating. There is no other furnishing object you can put on a floor that holds its value the way this one will.
The piece in a room
6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) sits cleanly under a three-seater sofa with the front legs on the rug, or floats in front of a primary bed flanked by side tables. The saturated red wants neutral envelopes, lime-washed walls in chalk or bone, oak or walnut floors, leather rather than fabric upholstery. A single graphic painting reads well above it. Patterned upholstery competes and should be avoided.
Conservation
Rotate one hundred eighty degrees twice a year so foot traffic and light age the rug evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the piece every five to seven years. Cared for this way, the carpet runs sixty to eighty years with the colour deepening rather than dulling.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
