Rugsville Overdyed Red Wool Carpet 8' x 8'

Overdyed rugs began as a recovery technique. Mid-twentieth century Turkish workshops took faded antique pieces, sheared the pile down to the foundation, and submerged the carpet in a single saturated colour bath, producing a rug that retained its original pattern as a ghost beneath a unified new ground. The technique was originally a way to extend the useful life of carpets that had become too worn to sell as antiques. The Overdyed Red carries that practice forward as a deliberate aesthetic decision, layering full-immersion red dye over a hand-knotted Persian-tradition base.

Two weavers shared the eight-foot circular loom in India for about four and a half months to produce the original ground. Roughly 800,000 asymmetric knots tied along curved warp lines, the pile then sheared down for the antique wash, and finally the entire round submerged in a hand-mixed red dye bath. The wool is pure with the original yarn dye still readable through the overdye as faint underdrawing. The cotton foundation holds the round true.

The composition

The red here is layered. There is the surface saturation of the immersion dye, then beneath it the suggestion of the original pattern showing through at slightly different angles of light. Movement around the carpet reveals shifting depth that a single-dyed rug cannot produce. Over years the surface red will mature and the ghosted pattern will become more legible, which is why overdyed pieces gain visual depth with age rather than losing it.

A wool-trained hand wash every five to seven years preserves the overdye saturation and the underlying pattern.
