The aged wool absorbed the red at slightly different intensities depending on the colour of the under-drawing, leaving a deep field with the architectural detail of the original carpet visible as a soft chromatic ghost beneath the new wash.

The composition

A confident saturated red across the entire field, lifted in places where the under-drawing rose ivory and softened in places where the under-drawing was already deep-toned. The original Ziegler vine and palmette pattern surfaces beneath the dye like a watermark, never assertive enough to compete with the new red but always present as a textural and chromatic event. The whole reads as one architectural ground at distance and as a layered textile object up close.
