Complete your setup
Pitch black is the hardest overdye to bring off because the slightest wash difference reads as flaw rather than as character on a true black field. The Overdyed Pitch Black carpet in front of you was finished by a workshop that has run the technique for years, holding the immersion bath at a controlled temperature long enough to flatten the original Persian colours under one dominant value while keeping the surface even.
Two to three weavers in India spent four months on the base weaving. The original cartoon was a classical Persian floral. After the field came off the loom, the rug was washed, sheared down to a low pile, and lowered into a black immersion bath. The Persian under-drawing remains visible as faint ghost variation in the surface, which is the signature of an honest overdye.
The composition
A pitch black field reads first, with the original Persian floral surfacing as a subtle texture under raking light. The pile sits low and the colour holds an even density across the field. As the wool ages with light, the black will hold and the under-pattern will become slightly more legible. The rug operates as a single quiet ground rather than as a focal object.
What you are buying
Black overdye pieces of this scale and density trade at international dealer prices of four to seven thousand US dollars. This is a current hand-knotted base with the same wash and immersion protocol, supplied substantially below dealer levels. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is the property that distinguishes a hand-finished floor from a printed alternative.
The piece in a room
6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) anchors a primary seating area or grounds a generous bedroom. The black field reads cleanly against cream limewash, walnut floors, brass, and oxidised steel, and it pairs especially well with leather upholstery and with unframed monochrome art. Avoid placing it against very dark walls, where the field loses its independence.
Conservation
Vacuum weekly, suction only. Rotate the rug end-to-end twice a year. Blot spills with cotton cloth, never rub. A wool conservator should wash the carpet every five to seven years. The piece expects an eighty-year service life on this regimen.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
