Overdyeing is a finishing technique borrowed from the Turkish trade, where weavers in the late twentieth century began rebathing existing wool carpets in a single saturated colour to produce surfaces that read as monochromes from a distance and as full pattern on approach. The process is unforgiving. The base rug must already be high quality, because a poor weave will not hold the second bath evenly, and the finishing dye must be matched precisely to the underlying drawing or the pattern is lost.
This carpet was first hand-knotted in India over approximately eight months by a team of four weavers working a vertical loom. The base drawing is a traditional floral Persian. After weaving and shearing, the rug entered a peacock-blue overdye bath, multi-day cold immersion in plant-derived indigo blended with weld for the green shift, then sun-dried over a wide rack. The result is a deep peacock blue field with the original floral drawing rising through the surface where the dye took differently across the underlying palette.
The composition
A peacock-blue field with the underlying Persian floral pattern visible as tonal shifts within the blue. The drawing reads as a watermark rather than as competing colour, which is the whole purpose of the overdye process. The blue carries a faint green at certain angles where the weld bath layered over the indigo, the way a glaze sits over an undercoat in oil paint. Daylight deepens the indigo over years, the green softens, the underlying drawing emerges more clearly as the surface dye lightens with traffic.
What you are buying
Overdyed wool carpets at 10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) appear in international design galleries at four to ten thousand dollars per square metre depending on the base rug, which puts a comparable piece in the fifty-to-one-hundred-thousand-dollar window. This is a current weaving on a hand-knotted base, finished in a traditional plant-dye overdye bath. The rug is sold to be used. It appreciates with use rather than depreciating in the way most furnishing does.
The piece in a room
10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) holds a substantial living area or a long dining floor. The peacock blue suits both modernist and traditional architectures, sitting against white or pale grey walls as a focal field, or against deeper blue and green walls as a settled ground. It pairs with brass, walnut, leather, and linen, and equally with concrete floors, steel-framed glass, and modernist furniture in oak and chrome.
Conservation
Rotate the carpet twice a year to age the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction only, beater bar lifted off the pile. Blot any spill immediately with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Schedule a hand wash with a wool conservator every five to seven years using plant-soap chemistry. The overdye is colour-stable but more sensitive to harsh detergent than a single-dyed rug, so insist on a gentle process. With care, the carpet runs decades.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
