Rugsville Overdyed Patchwork Multi color Wool Carpet 6' x 9'

Over-dyeing as a technique works on the principle that pigment layers, applied in sequence, behave differently from a single saturated dye bath. The original colour of each fragment shows through the over-dye in passages where the pile is shorter or the weave looser, and that uneven absorption is the visual signal of the technique. A patchwork made from over-dyed fragments thus has two registers of variation: the patchwork seams, and the colour shift within each fragment.

Three artisans worked together for close to five weeks on this 6 by 9 ft (183 by 274 cm) piece in India. Wool fragments from older rugs were assessed, cropped, washed, and over-dyed in small batches before being joined into a unified composition. The seams are hand-stitched and reinforced from the back with a cotton scrim that stabilises the assembly without adding stiffness to the surface. The colour conversation across the field is the result of fragment selection, dye-batch grouping, and seam placement, in that order.

The composition

A multi-colour patchwork field unified under a single tonal over-dye. Reds, blues, golds, and greens move across the assembly at different saturations depending on each fragment original construction. The seam grid creates a secondary architectural rhythm over the chromatic patchwork. Read at distance, the rug presents as a coherent multi-colour field; read at close range, each fragment reveals its individual character.

The piece in a room

6 by 9 ft (183 by 274 cm) anchors a primary bedroom, a small living room with a two-seater sofa and an armchair, or a dining setup for a four-seater table. The multi-colour palette pairs broadly: white walls in a modern setting, deeper wall colours in a more traditional plan. Layer over a larger neutral if the room scale runs bigger.

Care

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. Expect minor colour movement in the first conservator wash within the first year, which settles the over-dye. Dry clean professionally every two to three years. The first six weeks of use produce light shedding which is structural and stops on its own.
