Rugsville Overdyed Patchwork Charcoal Wool Carpet 6' x 9'

Charcoal as a wash colour does something specific to the patchwork format: it absorbs the disparate original colours of the fragments into a single near-monochromatic field, and the variation that survives is structural rather than chromatic. The eye reads weave density, pile height, and original motif before it reads colour, which inverts the usual hierarchy of the medium. The result is a quiet, architectural rug that nonetheless contains the history of every fragment in it.

This 6 by 9 ft (183 by 274 cm) piece took three artisans roughly five weeks in India. Wool fragments were assessed, cropped, washed clean of residual oil and old surface grime, and over-dyed in small batches in a charcoal solution that pulls the chromatic range of all the source rugs toward the dark grey end. The fragments were hand-stitched together with a cotton scrim back. The seams are deliberate, visible, and structural.

The composition

A nearly uniform charcoal field at the room scale, resolving on close approach into individual fragments at slightly different saturations. Underlying motifs from the source rugs surface as ghost drawings in passages where the original pile was short or the original colour particularly assertive. The seam grid creates a calm secondary architecture across the field. Charcoal is forgiving of dust and traffic in a way lighter rugs are not.

6 by 9 ft (183 by 274 cm) suits a primary bedroom, a small living area, or a dining setup for four. Charcoal grounds work hardest against pale walls in plaster, lime, or bone; the rug then reads as a considered foundation that lets the architecture above it stay quiet. Pair with brass, brushed steel, walnut, oak, leather, and linen. Avoid red-toned wood floors, which fight the cool grey.

Care

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. The first conservator wash within the first year settles the over-dye and removes any residual colour movement. Professional dry clean every two to three years. Use a non-slip underlay for stability under traffic.
