The contemporary is one of the older motifs in the carpet vocabulary, repeated across regions because it works at every scale, from a doorway runner to a thirty-foot ballroom carpet. The proportion of figure to ground was tuned to this size before the cartoon ever reached the loom, which is why the design holds together rather than fragmenting.
1 weaver shared the loom for about 2 months. Roughly 432,000 knots in navy wool, every one tied by hand against a vertical warp. The pile is hand-spun wool, chosen because it takes vegetable dye to depth and holds the design without flattening underfoot. The dyes were prepared from plant sources matured for two to three weeks in copper vats before the wool was lowered, which is why the colour reads alive rather than printed.
The composition
Across a navy field the contemporary pattern moves in a measured rhythm, the corners resolved without forcing symmetry that the loom cannot deliver. The dye is plant-derived, which gives the colour the live quality that synthetic colour cannot reach. The slight unevenness in the field is the signature of the loom and the hand, and it deepens with use rather than wearing away.
What you are buying
An equivalent antique with similar density and pattern would land in a London or New York gallery at a higher multiple than the price here. The weaving uses the same loom geometry, the same hand-spun wool, and the same vegetable colour. It will outlive its first owners and gain rather than lose against time.
The piece in a room
2'6" x 10' (76 x 305 cm) is the canonical entry or reading nook scale. The rug expects to anchor the seating arrangement rather than to sit underneath the furniture as flooring. Pairs with cream upholstery, brass hardware, and walnut floors. Reads serious without being severe. Direct sunlight helps the dye, not hurts it.
Conservation
Conservation is straightforward. Weekly vacuum on suction only, no beater bar. Rotate twice a year. Blot spills with clean cotton, never rub. Schedule a hand wash by a wool-trained cleaner every five years. Treated this way the rug outlasts the room around it.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
