Rugsville Overdyed Brown Wool Carpet 6' x 6'

Brown is the slowest of the over-dye colours to read as a contemporary intervention. The colour can sit too close to the original earth-tone palette of a classical floral rug to register as a deliberate choice. The Overdyed Brown square uses a chocolate-toned bath that pushes past the original tan and rust into a deeper warm brown, the way a strong tea stain shifts the apparent colour of a beige cotton shirt. The result is a rug that reads as both classical and contemporary at once.

Three weavers built this 6' x 6' (183 x 183 cm) square in India over around five months. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, knotted at a traditional density to give the floral drawing definition before the over-dye softens it. The rug was washed in an antique bath after knotting, sheared close, and then immersed in a hand-mixed brown dye in copper vessels for several hours.

The composition

A warm chocolate brown field with the underlying floral pattern visible in a slightly darker tone. The over-dye sits unevenly across the field; older sections drink it more completely than newer sections, leaving an abrash that the eye reads as warmth rather than as inconsistency. The brown will warm slightly toward an espresso depth over the first decade as the wool oxidises and gains lustre.

Hand-knotted over-dyed wool rugs at this size and labour are priced two to three times higher in Western markets. The over-dye process is a single immersion in a hand-mixed bath, not a chemical print. The brown over-dye is the most subtle of the colours in the over-dye family; the piece reads as a quiet contemporary intervention rather than a loud one.

6' x 6' (183 x 183 cm) suits a small dining for four, a meditation room, or the floor of a study with a single armchair. The brown ground pairs with cream and ivory plaster walls, with limewashed white, with leather upholstery in cognac or oxblood, with brass lamps. Avoid pairing with strongly competing brown wood-panelled walls; let the rug be the warm note.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar off. Rotate the square a quarter turn each season for even wear. Blot any spill immediately with a clean cotton cloth. Hand-wash by a wool conservator every five to seven years. The brown over-dye deepens slightly with use rather than fading.
