Over-dyed carpets emerged from a specific commercial moment in the 1990s, when New York and London dealers began taking older floral rugs, washing them down to a faded base, and re-dipping them in a single saturated bath of contemporary colour. The aesthetic became a category of its own. The Aqua Breeze round translates that idea into a new piece, with a classical floral pattern hand-knotted in wool and then taken through an aqua over-dye that lifts the rug into modernist territory.

Three weavers worked this 6' (183 cm diameter) round in India over around five months. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, knotted in a traditional density that gives the floral drawing its definition before the over-dye softens it. After weaving the rug went through an antique wash, was sheared close, and then immersed in a hand-mixed aqua bath in copper vessels.

The composition

A pale aqua field with the floral repeat reading in a slightly deeper aqua, the way a watercolour wash leaves drawing visible underneath. The colour is not uniform; the over-dye sits unevenly over the original lighter palette and the field carries small tonal variations across its surface. Direct sunlight brings out the underdrawing; ambient light flattens the rug into a single soft aqua field.

Comparable hand-knotted over-dyed rounds price two to three times higher at design dealers in London or New York. The over-dye process is hand-mixed and immersion-applied, not chemical printed. The piece is a contemporary work in a recent tradition; it appreciates with use as the wool gains lustre and the over-dye settles.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Rotate the round a quarter turn each season for even light and traffic exposure. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth from the outside in. Hand-wash by a wool conservator every five to seven years. The aqua over-dye holds its character with this routine.
