The Oushak tradition emerged in western Anatolia in the late fifteenth century and reached its second peak in the workshops of the Ottoman court four centuries later. What separates a real Oushak from its many imitations is restraint. Large fields of low-saturation colour, oversized floral medallions drawn with the looseness of a brush rather than a pen, and a soft palette built around natural greys, ivories, and faded madder. The piece in front of you carries that drawing logic into a contemporary scale.
Five weavers shared the loom in India for nine months. The pile is hand-spun wool laid against a cotton foundation, the knots tied row by row with the asymmetric loop that the Anatolian workshops used to keep the field soft and slightly irregular. The dye lots were prepared in small copper pots from indigo, oak gall, and walnut hull, then tested against sample skeins for two weeks before the wool was committed.
The composition
Soft grey ground that drifts toward warm putty under lamplight. Open floral cartouches drawn loosely in cream and oxidised silver, anchored at the centre by a faded medallion that does not insist on itself. The border is a single ivory band with vine work in muted graphite. The grey is not a single colour. It is twelve shades of dyed wool combined on the loom, which is what gives the field its slow visual movement.
What you are buying
Period Oushaks of comparable scale and condition trade at international auction in the range of forty to ninety thousand US dollars when they appear, which they rarely do in this size. This is a new weaving tied on a vertical loom in India in the same fibre and to the same density as its nineteenth-century antecedents. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. Few categories of object share that property.
The piece in a room
12' x 18' (366 x 549 cm) is a banquet-hall scale. The rug expects a long dining table with twelve to sixteen seats above it, or a double seating arrangement in a great room where two sofas face one another across a low table. Limewashed walls hold the grey palette. The wool also reads beautifully against pale oak parquet and against polished Indian sandstone.
Conservation
Rotate by half a turn each spring and autumn so the field ages evenly under foot traffic and light. Vacuum weekly with suction only and the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and never rub the pile. A trained wool conservator should hand-wash the rug every five to seven years. With this care the piece will outlive its first three owners.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
