Indigo is the oldest of the carpet dyes and the only one that deepens with age rather than fading. The classical Anatolian and Persian workshops built whole palettes around it, layering madder and walnut over the indigo base to produce the slow shifts of blue that distinguish a hand-dyed Oushak from a synthetic copy. The blue at the heart of this piece carries that lineage forward.

Five weavers worked the loom in India for nine months to bring this carpet to size. The wool is hand-spun and the foundation is cotton. The dye lots were prepared in small copper vats from natural indigo and supporting plant material, then matured for two weeks before the skeins were lowered. The asymmetric knot was tied against a vertical beam at a comfortable hand pace, which is the only way a rug of this scale stays uniform across its eighteen-foot length.

The composition

A deep indigo field that reads navy in lamplight and almost black at dusk. Open floral medallions in faded ivory and oxidised gold drift across the field with the irregular grace that only plant dye produces. The border is restrained, a single ivory guard band with a slow vine in soft umber. Because the indigo was dyed in two passes, the colour will deepen by perhaps fifteen percent over the first decade, and the ivory will warm into bone.

What you are buying

A late nineteenth-century Oushak in indigo and at this scale, with comparable condition, would clear forty to ninety thousand US dollars at a Western auction sale. This is a contemporary weaving made in India in the same fibre, on the same kind of loom, to the same density as its antique counterpart. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. There is no other category of furniture that behaves this way at any price point.

The piece in a room

12' x 18' (366 x 549 cm) reads as a defined room within a room. The blue holds a long dining table beautifully, especially under brass or warm halogen light. It also makes excellent ground for a double-sofa lounge arrangement in a high-ceilinged drawing room. Pale walls let the indigo dominate; deep painted walls let it recede into the architecture.

Conservation

Rotate the rug by half a turn each March and September so foot traffic and natural light age the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only and the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a dry cotton cloth on contact and never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years. With that care the piece runs eighty to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
