Rugsville Oushaks Traditional Floral Beige Wool Persian Carpet 12' x 18'

The pale Oushak is a category of its own. The Anatolian workshops developed it for buyers who wanted the drawing complexity of a Persian floral carpet without the heavy saturation of the classical palette. The result is a rug that behaves almost like a piece of architecture rather than ornament, a soft chalky field that organises a room without crowding it. The piece in front of you sits inside that long lineage.

Roughly nine months of bench time went into this carpet, with five weavers sharing the vertical loom in India. The pile is hand-spun wool tied row by row with the asymmetric knot against a cotton warp and weft. The wool was washed in cold water and dyed in small lots from oak gall, pomegranate rind, walnut hull, and a small charge of indigo to keep the cream from going yellow. The dye stock was matured for ten to fourteen days before the skeins were lowered into the vats.

The composition

A beige field with a faint warm pull, almost the colour of unbleached linen. Floral medallions drawn loosely in cream and faded ochre rest across the surface with the looseness of a watercolour rather than the precision of a print. The border is a single soft band of vine work in dusty rose and walnut. Because the wool was over-dyed in two baths, the field carries a subtle tonal shift that holds the eye where a flat colour would not.

An antique pale Oushak of this scale and condition is a vanishing object. When one surfaces at a major Western auction house it carries an estimate between thirty-five and eighty thousand US dollars. This is a contemporary hand-knotted weaving in India in the same fibre, on the same kind of vertical loom, to the same density as the carpets it descends from. A piece in this category appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the wool deepens in tone over the first decade.

Conservation

Rotate by half a turn twice a year so the central medallions wear evenly. Vacuum weekly, suction only, never with a beater bar engaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and address them on contact rather than letting them set. Hand wash by a trained wool conservator every five years. With this regimen the rug runs a hundred years and outlives its first owners.
