The Ziegler design originates with a Manchester firm that opened a buying office in western Iran in 1883. Its commission was simple. Soften the dense floral repeats of Persian classical tradition into a quieter, open field that suited the drawing rooms of late Victorian Britain. The pattern set down on this loom is a direct continuation of that long conversation between East and West.
Two weavers shared the loom for 4 months. Around 691 thousand hand-tied knots at roughly 120 per square inch, every one set against a vertical beam by feel. The pile is long-staple wool, prepared in small batches and lowered into copper vats for plant-based dye drawn from indigo, weld, oak gall, and walnut hull, each colour matured for two to three weeks before the wool is dyed. The foundation is cotton, hand-spun and tensioned across the warp before the first row of knots is tied. The fringe at either end is the warp itself, knotted off and trimmed by hand once the rug comes off the loom. The piece reads at 5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) in beige, finished in India.
The composition
Vinework in beige runs corner to corner with the irregular grace plant dye produces. The pattern is denser at the centre and opens toward the borders, so the eye reads the rug as a single composition rather than as a tile that repeats. The rosettes are drawn at a scale that registers from across a room without losing their internal detail to anyone who walks closer.
What you are buying
Antique Ziegler carpets of equivalent attribution sell at Rippon Boswell and Sotheby's in the range of thirty to seventy thousand US dollars when they appear at auction. This is a new weaving in the same lineage, on the same kind of vertical loom, in the same fibre. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is a property no other floor object holds at any price.
The piece in a room
5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) sits under a two-seat sofa and a narrow coffee table, or anchors a writing desk in a study. The beige register holds against pale walls and against warm wood floors with equal authority. Position the sofa with the front legs on the rug and the back legs on the floor. The composition holds at a low viewing angle from a seated position, which is the angle most of the day will be spent looking at it.
Conservation
Keep the rug out of direct sunlight for prolonged hours per day to slow the natural lightening of plant dye. Vacuum with suction only. Rotate twice a year. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the piece every five years. Properly cared for, the rug runs three generations.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
