Silk and wool together is one of the older partnerships in the knotted carpet world. The wool carries the body of the field, the silk lifts the highlights to a sheen the wool alone cannot reach, and a rug woven in the two fibres reads differently from morning to evening as light angles across the pile. This Opera composition draws on that long-standing pairing and renders it in a gold palette built for the formal interior.
Two to three weavers shared the loom for roughly five months to complete this 6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) carpet. Each knot was tied by feel against a vertical beam, the wool drawn from semi-worsted New Zealand fleece and the silk inserted at the highlight passages where the design called for the brightest reflection. The cotton foundation was double-warped to hold the density at full tension across the four-and-a-half foot weft.
The composition
Gold across most of the field, set against a softer silver ground that lets the warmer tone read forward. The silk passages catch light at glancing angles and recede into the wool at a flat view, which is what gives the carpet its shifting personality through the day. The pattern is restrained for an Opera weave, with the colour interaction doing the work the geometry would otherwise carry.
What you are buying
Wool-and-silk hand-knotted carpets at this scale, with this density, sit well above the ₹2 lac mark in international dealer inventory. The Opera line offers the same fibre, the same hand, and the same loom against a substantially lower entry. The piece appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the silk highlights deepen rather than dull as the wool around them ages.
The piece in a room
6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) is the working scale for a primary living area, a generous bedroom, or a dining room with a six-seater table fully contained within the rug's edges. The gold reads warm against cream walls and turns architectural against deeper paint. Pairs with walnut, brass, leather, and warm timber furniture.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly, suction only, no beater bar, especially across the silk passages where a beater would lift the highlight fibre. Blot spills, never rub. Hand wash by a fibre-trained conservator every four to five years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
