Rust is one of the harder colours to take to depth in wool, because the pigment that produces it sits high on the fibre and tends to dull when over-dyed. The Opera workshop solves this by carrying the rust passage in pure silk and letting the wool do the muted ground work around it. The result is a carpet where the dominant colour is also the highest-shine colour, and the eye reads the field as glowing rather than printed.

About four months of work for two weavers in India. Hand-spun wool was knotted across a cotton warp and weft, with mulberry silk dropped into the rust and lighter accent areas at the design points fixed by the cartoon. The dye was prepared from madder root cooked in copper, alum-mordanted and lowered into the silk hank in two passes to set the saturation deep enough to hold under a decade of room light.

The composition

A rust field with cream, ivory, and faint indigo accents drawn through it. The wool ground reads matte; the silk passages read lit. As the angle of view shifts, the rust deepens or lightens by half a tone. The pattern is soft floral with no centred medallion, the kind of distributed composition that lets the colour do the work and the geometry stay in the background.

Whitewashed walls let the colour push forward as a focal field; mid-tone walls let the carpet sit as a considered ground. Avoid strongly patterned upholstery; the rug expects to lead the colour conversation in the room.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly with suction only. The silk passages crush under sustained pressure, so use felt pads under chair legs and rotate the rug end-for-end each spring and autumn. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and avoid water on silk highlights. A wool-and-silk-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every four to six years. With this care, the carpet outlasts a lifetime of use.
