Brown is the carpet world's most underrated colour. It absorbs light without flattening, holds dust without showing it, and ages forward into a richer version of itself. The eighteenth-century English drawing-room favoured a warm brown ground for exactly these reasons, and the late Persian transitional weavers carried that preference into their export work for European houses. The piece in front of you is a contemporary weaving in that older preference, in wool, on a cotton warp.
Two to three weavers shared the loom across about five months. Hand-spun wool, knotted at the density needed to render the slow tonal shifts the design depends on. The pile uses three close brown lots layered against beige and gold accents, so the field reads as a single warm ground from a distance and reveals its internal weave on approach.
The composition
A field of warm walnut brown with a soft tonal drift across the surface. A central medallion in beige and gold, drawn small enough to leave the air around it intact. The border is a single muted band that does not compete with the field. Brown rugs of this kind succeed by restraint. The eye reads the rug as colour first and pattern second, which is the discipline that separates a transitional carpet from a busier traditional one.
What you are buying
Brown-ground transitional carpets in this idiom and scale, with intact condition, sell at international auction between fifteen and thirty thousand dollars. This is a contemporary weaving in the same tradition, in the same fibre, on the same kind of loom. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. The brown deepens further over the next decade and the gold warms into old brass.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a primary living room with the sofa and chairs floating on the pile, a six-seat dining setting, or a study with a single armchair and a desk. The warm brown palette suits oak, walnut, brass, leather upholstery, and pale plaster walls. Lamp light reveals the tonal depth that overhead light suppresses.
Conservation
Rotate every six months. Vacuum twice a week, suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth from the outside in. Hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years. Treated this way the rug lasts eighty years and longer.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Customer Reviews
Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
