On the other, the spare modernist field that emerged from twentieth-century Scandinavian and American interiors. A transitional carpet borrows the hand of the first and the breathing room of the second, and the result is a floor that holds beside both an inherited rosewood cabinet and a contemporary linen sofa.

Two weavers worked this 5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) piece over roughly three and a half months. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton warp and weft, knotted with the Persian asymmetric knot. The grey-beige surface is the result of a two-stage wash. First a mild plant-soap rinse to clear loom oils, then a brief tea-wash that softens the dye reading and lays a cool bloom across the field.

The composition

A grey beige ground, no medallion, with a quiet floral repeat that reads almost as a watermark from standing height. The grey carries enough warmth to sit beside oak rather than against it, and the cream-tone stems and petals dissolve into the field at certain light angles, which is the signature of a hand-spun pile rather than a uniform machine yarn. The colour will quiet further with age. A rug like this rewards a five-year view.

Comparable transitional weavings of equivalent density and fibre quality trade through Western retail at three to four times this price, and the gap is widening as hand-knot capacity in India contracts each year. Conservation
