Rugsville Opera Silver Beige Wool & Silk Carpet 6' x 9'

Silver as a colour belongs more to the metal than to the dye pot. To get a wool field to read silver rather than grey, the weaver works with a cool over-dye on lightly bleached fibre and lets the wool's natural sheen do the rest. The Opera Silver is built around that effect, with silk inlay at the accent passages amplifying the tonal play across the rug.

This 6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) carpet was hand-knotted by a team of two to three weavers across five months on a vertical cotton-warped loom. The wool was drawn from semi-worsted New Zealand fleece with a long staple. The silk was sourced as filament-grade thread and inlaid at the highlight passages of the transitional pattern where the design called for the brightest reflection. Each knot was tied by feel, with the pattern transferred from a cartoon mounted at the top of the loom.

The composition

A silver field over a beige underground, with the beige showing through at the field margins where the pattern opens. The silk inlay sits on top of the wool tonally, lifting the design at glancing light. There is no medallion, no central focal point. The composition is built to be read as a single considered ground that shifts subtly with the time of day.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn so the silk passages do not fade unevenly under directional light. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Spills should be blotted with a dry cotton cloth. Hand wash by a fibre-trained conservator every four years to lift soil before it migrates into the silk inlay.
