Rugsville Opera Purple Wool & Silk Carpet 5' x 8'

Purple as a carpet ground is a deliberate choice; the colour was historically the most expensive natural dye, sourced from murex shells in the Mediterranean and from cochineal-and-indigo combinations elsewhere. The Opera Purple uses a contemporary over-dye process to lift a classical floral field into a saturated modern purple, the way the New York studios of the 1990s began over-dyeing antique rugs to fit modernist interiors. The rug is the studio rug, not a museum reproduction.

Two weavers shared this 5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) loom in India for around four months. The pile is wool with silk highlights along the floral incident; the silk catches light along the vines while the wool carries the saturated ground. The cotton foundation is hand-mounted on a vertical loom. After weaving the rug was washed, sheared, and immersed in a hand-mixed purple over-dye bath.

The composition

A saturated purple field carries a quieter floral repeat in deeper plum and faint rose, with silk catching along the principal vines. The over-dye sits over the original lighter palette, so the rug carries the depth of two layers of colour rather than one. Over the first year the purple settles slightly; the silk highlights stay closer to their first reflectance.

Hand-knotted wool-and-silk pieces with a hand-mixed over-dye are priced in Western markets at two to four times this MSRP. The over-dye is the signature of a workshop that mixes its own colour rather than buying it premixed. A piece of this construction holds its character with use; the rug appreciates rather than depreciating.

The purple wants ivory or pale grey walls to amplify it; against a darker wall the rug recedes into the architecture. Pairs with brass, with walnut, with linen in cream or oatmeal. Avoid pairing with strong competing reds.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly on a low suction setting; the silk highlights need gentler handling than the wool ground. Blot spills with a clean white cotton cloth. Hand-wash by a wool-silk conservator every five to six years. The purple holds its over-dye depth with this routine; rotate seasonally for even wear.
