Opera as a rug name belongs to the transitional studios that came out of late twentieth-century weaving collectives in India, where designers worked to soften the rigid axial symmetry of classical Persian carpets into compositions that could carry many colours at once without losing graphic clarity. The result is a pattern that reads as floral from a distance and resolves into ornamented panels at close range, a rhythm closer to libretto than to landscape.

Two weavers shared the loom for around three and a half months. The pile is a wool and silk blend in which the silk highlights are tied in at lower density to catch reflected light against the wool ground. The Persian asymmetric knot is used throughout, on a cotton foundation. Wool was washed twice and conditioned in lanolin emulsion to keep the staple supple, then dyed across a multi-bath palette to carry the spectrum the design requires.

The composition

A multi-coloured field, ivory through rose, ochre, sage, and slate, organised around a faded central medallion that anchors the eye without claiming the room. The silk highlights run along the leaf and vine work, picking up window light, while the wool body holds the matte ground. Colour interaction is the substance of this rug. The rose and sage neutralise each other, the ochre warms the ivory, and the whole composition reads as a single tonal cloud rather than a list of hues.

What you are buying

A wool and silk hand-knotted carpet at this scale and density, when sourced from Western design houses or auction galleries, will price between $4,000 and $9,000 once import duty and gallery margin are layered on. This is the same fibre, the same knot, the same hand. The rug holds and slowly increases its value as the silk surface softens into its patina. A printed or machine-tufted equivalent will lose half its appearance inside three years.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) is the working scale for a study, the foot of a king bed, a small living seating area, or an entry hall under a console. The multi palette pairs with rooms that have a quiet base, off-white or warm grey walls, oak or walnut floors, and a few collected objects in brass or stone. The silk highlights make the rug appear to change with the time of day.

Conservation

Rotate the rug each season to even out light exposure on the silk highlights. Vacuum weekly with suction only and the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills immediately with cotton and cool water. Hand wash by a wool-and-silk trained conservator at year five. Silk requires gentler chemistry than pure wool, so do not use commercial carpet shampoos.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
