A single hand worked the piece for 3 months at the vertical loom. Around 173K knots, each one tied by hand against a vertical beam. The pile is mulberry silk, drawn from spun cocoons of Bombyx mori, the fibre that gives the rug its low-angle reflectance and the depth Persian workshops have prized for four centuries. Silk does not need vegetable dyeing to register colour, the fibre's reflectance does most of the work; the pile here was dyed in low-temperature acid baths to preserve the lustre.

The composition

The grey and silver of the ground sits behind a layered lattice that reveals more on approach than at distance. Vegetable colour does not arrive fixed. The reds will lighten by a half tone over the first decade, the indigos will deepen, the ivory will warm into bone. The rug arrives ready to begin that work.
