Two to three weavers shared the loom for around five months. Hand-spun wool with silk highlight yarn, knotted against a cotton warp at a density that reads as a continuous surface from across a room. The base wool is dyed in three close grey lots, layered through the field rather than separated, so the surface holds a quiet internal variation that printed copies cannot reproduce.

The composition

A near-monochrome grey field with the silk highlights set in slow arabesques that catch light from one angle and disappear from the other. A small central reserve, a single guard border, and nothing else competing for the eye. The grey behaves as a cool ground at midday and warms toward old pewter under lamp light. The composition is built around the discipline of a single colour. Pattern is the supporting actor, not the lead.

Hand wash by a conservator trained in wool and silk every five years. Treated this way the rug lasts seventy to eighty years.
