Blue grounds carry a particular weight in the Persian tradition. Indigo was the first costly dye to enter the carpet workshops and remained a marker of seriousness through the Safavid and Qajar periods. The Opera blue draws on that lineage, treating the field as a single deep ground rather than as scaffolding for ornament, and letting the silk highlights do the work of incident. The result reads quieter than a comparable polychrome composition and holds longer in a room.

This carpet was hand-knotted in India by three weavers working a single loom for around five months. The pile is wool with silk laid into the floral incidents, asymmetric knots tied row by row against a vertical beam, the foundation cotton warps and wefts. The silk passages were spun finer than the wool ground so the highlights catch directional light and the field absorbs it, the optical contrast of two different fibres at different reflectance.

The composition

An indigo blue field, deep and slightly oceanic. Cream and pale gold floral work runs through the centre with silk in the petals so the design lifts forward when light crosses the surface. The border is restrained, a single guard band in the same blue with a paler edge. Over the next decade the indigo will settle into a softer petrol tone, the cream will warm, and the silk will develop the slight patina that distinguishes a used carpet from a new one.

What you are buying

The MSRP of ₹3.05 lac reflects equivalent retail pricing for blended-fibre hand-knotted carpets at this scale. The listed price of ₹1.29 lac is roughly direct-from-workshop economics. A hand-knotted silk-wool piece is durable in a way no synthetic equivalent matches and will outlast the room it is first placed in.

The piece in a room

At 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) the carpet sits comfortably under a six-seat dining table or anchors a primary living room sofa group. The blue holds against pale walls and warmer wood floors, and pairs with brass, antique mirror, and ivory upholstery. Direct sunlight is welcome; UV exposure restores the visual depth indoor light slowly washes out.

Conservation

Half-turn rotation twice a year. Weekly vacuuming with suction only, beater bar lifted away from the pile. Blot spills immediately with cotton, never rub the silk passages. A trained conservator should hand-wash the carpet every five years to preserve the indigo saturation and the silk lustre. With this treatment the carpet runs decades.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
