A wool and silk pile changes the way a transitional pattern reads underfoot. Silk takes dye to a higher saturation than wool and reflects light in a different direction, so when a carpet is woven with both fibres the silk passages are the ones that catch the room first. The Opera drawing uses that property deliberately, placing silk highlights into a wool ground so the design opens up under direct light and recedes again into the wool when the light moves on.

Three weavers worked this 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) loom for about six months. The wool is highland-grade, hand-spun and washed before dyeing so the fibre keeps its lustre, and the silk highlights are introduced row by row with the same Persian asymmetric knot used for the wool body. Dyes were prepared in small copper vessels and matured for two weeks before any yarn was lowered into them. The carpet was knotted entirely in India, in the karkhana tradition that has produced the country's transitional repertoire for the last forty years.

The composition

A field of warm beige with a brown vine and palmette pattern running corner to corner, lifted by silk highlights that catch the light at oblique angles. The brown is layered, with two distinct depths visible depending on viewing angle, because the silk is dyed to a different note than the wool around it. The palette is restrained on purpose; this is a transitional carpet that wants to sit quietly with contemporary furniture rather than competing with it.

What you are buying

A wool and silk hand-knotted carpet of this scale, with this knot density and this fibre quality, prices in the European trade at $4,500 to $9,000 retail. Vegetable-dyed silk highlights in particular hold their value because the fibre is expensive and the technique is slow. The carpet appreciates with use as the silk passages develop their patina; nothing about a hand-knotted wool and silk piece depreciates the way machine-made flooring does.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) reads beautifully in a primary living area arranged around a sofa and two armchairs, or under a six-seat dining table. The beige and brown palette is at its best on warm oak or walnut floors, with off-white walls and brass or unlacquered bronze accents. The silk highlights mean the carpet performs differently in morning, midday, and evening light; rotate the seating once you live with it for a season.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn every six months so traffic and sun age the silk and wool evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction, beater bar off; silk is unforgiving of mechanical agitation. Blot any spill with a dry cotton cloth and never rub. Hand-wash by a wool-and-silk-trained conservator every four to five years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
